What a prerelease actually is

A prerelease is a casual sealed event where players open new cards early, build decks from that pool, and play before the set’s general release.

A prerelease is a scheduled card event tied to an upcoming set. Players receive sealed product at the event, open it there, and build a deck from only the cards they opened. The point is to try new cards in a low-stakes setting, not to compete with optimized decks.

It is also a social event. You will sit across from people who may have different experience levels, and you may trade after rounds if the organizer allows it. Treat the event as a first look at the set and a chance to learn how its cards interact.

What actually happens

Most prereleases follow a simple loop: registration, opening sealed product, deck building, rounds of play, and a wrap-up. The organizer supplies the product and explains the format. You do not bring a prebuilt constructed deck. Bring sleeves, dice or counters if you use them, a playmat if you like, water, and a way to track life or game state. Confirm the start time and location with the organizer before you go.

Before you arrive

Read the event listing for format details, entry requirements, and any rules the store uses. Check whether the event is casual or has a competitive rules enforcement level. If you are new, tell the organizer. Ask what you need to bring and whether trading is allowed during the event. Arrive early enough to register and set up. Keep your card pool organized so you can find cards while building.

Building from a sealed pool

Sort your pool by color, card type, and playability. Set aside cards you are unlikely to play. Build around two colors or a clear theme rather than trying to use every card. Count your deck before you submit it. Check that you have enough basic resources and that your curve gives you plays at different points in the game. Do not add cards from outside your sealed pool unless the organizer says they are provided.

During play and after

Play at a steady pace and call a judge or organizer if a rule question comes up. Keep your pool separate from other players’ cards. After rounds, ask before trading, and do not pressure anyone. If the event includes prize support, the organizer will explain it. The main goal is to learn the set and meet other players.

Do I need a constructed deck?

No. A prerelease uses sealed product supplied at the event, and you build from what you open.

Can I trade at a prerelease?

Ask the organizer. Many events allow trading, but store rules and timing can vary.

What should I bring?

Bring sleeves if you use them, counters or dice, water, and anything the organizer lists. Confirm details with the store before the event.
